The Illinois Basin is an intercratonic basin covering an area of approximately 155,000 km 2 in Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. Coal-bearing, Pennsylvanian strata thickens into two depocenters within the basin; the semi-circular Fairfield Basin in south-central Illinois, and the much narrower and deeper, Moorman Syncline in western Kentucky (Fig. 1A).
